Job Summary:
The Traffic Signal Maintenance Superintendent is responsible for overseeing the operation, maintenance, and repair of traffic signal systems for our Indianapolis office. This role involves supervising a team of technicians and ensuring that all traffic signal equipment operates safely and efficiently to optimize traffic flow and ensure public safety. The superintendent will also manage preventive maintenance programs, troubleshoot system malfunctions, and coordinate with other departments or agencies as needed.
Key Responsibilities:
· Supervise and lead a team of traffic signal technicians, ensuring high performance, safety, and adherence to best practices.
· Oversee the installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic signal systems, including controllers, cabinets, loops, and all related components.
· Conduct inspections of traffic signal systems to assess functionality and performance.
· Develop and manage preventive maintenance programs to extend the lifespan of traffic signal infrastructure and reduce downtime.
· Respond to emergency traffic signal failures or malfunctions and provide prompt resolution.
· Coordinate with local law enforcement, emergency services, and other departments regarding traffic signal issues, road closures, or incidents.
· Maintain accurate records of repairs, inspections, and maintenance activities, including work orders and inventory management.
· Ensure that work complies with relevant safety standards, traffic regulations, and industry best practices.
· Provide recommendations for improvements to traffic signal systems and infrastructure.
· Manage the budget for traffic signal maintenance, including procurement of materials, equipment, and tools.
· Provide training and professional development opportunities for staff to enhance skills and knowledge.
· Collaborate with engineers and planners to assess traffic patterns and implement signal optimization strategies.
· Stay current with technological advancements in traffic signal management and maintenance practices.
Qualifications:
· High school diploma or equivalent; associate or bachelor’s degree in a related field (e.g., civil engineering, transportation management) preferred.
· Needs to be at least a Level 2 Technician, Level 3 Technician preferred.
· Minimum of five (5) years of experience in traffic signal maintenance, including five (5) years in a supervisory or management role.
· In-depth knowledge of traffic signal systems, controllers, and related components, including TS1 and TS2 cabinets.
· In-depth knowledge of EVP systems.
· Familiarity with traffic management software and signal control systems.
· Strong leadership and team management skills.
· Excellent problem-solving abilities and the ability to make quick decisions under pressure.
· Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
· Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and manage multiple projects.
· Knowledge of local traffic laws, codes, and safety regulations.
· Certification in traffic signal maintenance or a related field (e.g., International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) certification) is preferred.
· Ability to lift and carry equipment up to 50 pounds, work in outdoor conditions, and safely navigate traffic environments.
Working Conditions:
· This position requires evening, weekend, or holiday work in response to emergencies or special projects.
· Work is conducted both in the field and in an office environment.
· Must be able to work in all weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and snow.
· May be required to travel locally or regionally for inspections and maintenance activities.
